anyway clearly i lied about you going last because crau is about to happen and i really should give you something to work off, or, well, an idea of how much trouble that you gave me. anyway, the fact that i was rolled to be the mastermind made me suffer in itself but coupled with the fact of their conflicting canon points, things weren’t any better. mainly because it didn’t change the fact that giyuu wanted to protect her from dying (again), and between mitsuri and shinobu he favored shinobu because of whatever they are...even though there is no “future” for her to return to. even though he more than accepts what happened to her. they’re pillars; dying is just an occupational hazard. something built into the job description. however, despite of this, giyuu wanted to do what he could because he had come to the resolve that he would protect those who meant something to him with his life. so, even though there was nothing waiting for her at home, he still wanted to do something for her here.
giyuu is an idiot and i hate him.
the fun is when the factor of the mastermind comes into play because he knew that he could keep shinobu safe...or, well, relatively safe. there was nothing to ensure that the people he picked wouldn’t go after shinobu or mitsuri, but he could do enough to where shinobu would be seen as reliable and someone that shouldn’t die. (ie. him telling dimitri to seek her out because she is someone who is to be trusted.) ...and he could make sure that she wouldn’t be picked to complete the ritual because of the trials (sorry ara). though that would have been fine there?? i wouldn’t have suffered if that’s all that happened??? the part where my suffering happened was the fact that it was during their first conversation that shinobu pointed out to giyuu how untrustworthy/weak his opinion of who he considered to be friends was. ...as well as encouraged him to make bonds with others… AND how they all mutually accepted to take care and look after each camp that they arrived at. which, you know, as the mastermind threw a huge wrench into his plans because he didn’t want to care about anyone else.
…and that’s exactly what ended up happening, too. giyuu ended up becoming attached to jungle camp which meant he would have more people he would want to “save” instead of just faces and numbers. SO THANKS SHINOBU. truly, anything that caused him to make efforts to socialize better with anyone else, was a direct result of shinobu’s words. it was just unfortunate that it worked so well with his cursed self’s intentions. but what really threw him for a loop was the way that they began to interact with one another—how they had moments where giyuu wasn’t automatically shooting himself in the foot or putting it into his mouth. in those moments he would consider if they could call each other friends, but then again, if they were, she’d be the one to tell him that… right? giyuu wasn't going to consider them friends. shinobu pointed out that she didn't consider them friends.
regardless of that, though, he had even began to make note of her more sincere smiles—NOT LIKE HE KNEW WHAT TO DO WITH THEM—but somewhere between those smiles and the fish she gave him, he really began to value her and think about what he really lost. which clearly made things harder because it pushed him into trying to complete the ritual to ensure that they could escape the best way he knew they would. yes, yes, he is fully aware of what awaits her, but he's an idiot. if there was anything he could do, he wanted to.
the height of his struggles was during that thread where NONE OF US WENT TO BED because he was torn between wanting to jump in and say something because of his desire to help her but also know that nothing he could say would pardon him from suspicion. maybe they wouldn’t expect him if he didn’t say anything… he figured that shinobu knew at that point which made the whole execution stranger in retrospect because she had to know, right? the fact that she threw herself in the way and outright lied about killing someone—forcing dimitri’s hand—outright triggered him. COULD PEOPLE STOP DYING IN FRONT OF HIM THAT’D BE SWELL….. so, this leaves us with endgame where giyuu feels nothing but guilt for what happened on the island but also treasures the memories he has made with her on the island—as tainted as they are. her memory and her sacrifices live within him and he’ll never forget her—which is the way it should end but thanks crau ://///
