tl;dr

looks up at the sky, into the sun, and then into the abyss

it was only two weeks, and their cr went through more hoops than in canon. if someone who cares about kny spoilers is for some reason reading this, don't read beyond this point. we're going to spoiler town.

anyway, it's partly because she is dead that she was that much kinder to giyuu. shinobu wanted to impart kindness before she went back to being dead. shinobu cares for people on a basic level because she is someone who cares so much about everything, but that doesn't make her like everyone. i wouldn't say she likes giyuu too much, but she can be civil with him and work with him. (civil, as if he isn't the person she bullies the most.) but because she was dead, it's why she wanted to push giyuu into becoming a better person. giyuu and kanao aren't the same, but their inability to connect to others for (different) traumatic reasons is similar. she was still annoyed in part because of him, but she felt that if he could work better with others, it would increase his and others' chances of survival. on the island and at home.

for all that she thinks he is not great at being a person, she knows he's fine with his responsibilities. it's their positions as pillars that instilled that kind of trust and faith and that canon seems to have them working together often enough. it's why she more or less accepted him coming out of the gate talking about how the island was cursed. it was suspicious, but there's no reason why she shouldn't trust him? what did the island being cursed even mean? there was no proof of anyone being compelled or anything. it was day zero. no one knew anything except giyuu obviously.

ANYWAY, she did note his character development! much as she did in his gaiden, she noticed tanjiro's protag effects on him, and she thought it was ??? but she didn't think it was bad. it was a step in the right direction, she thought, so she tried to encourage him to keep going in that way. being with people is better than not. understanding other people is better than not, etc.

because of her trust in him, she didn't suspect him much because of how much he seemed to grow. he seemed to care more, and that was something she wanted to believe in. she also thinks he's an airhead most of the time, so that doesn't help put her in the thinking giyuu is possible of being the mastermind kind of mood. as observant and intelligent as shinobu is, she can still be quite stubborn about the impressions she's formed.

but she told him to talk to mitsuri because mitsuri, the love pillar, is easy mode. he can't possibly fuck up a conversation with misturi while he has a high probability with anyone else. that was her reasoning, but also mitsuri is very quick to profess how much she loves people, and like, shinobu is not blind? she can see when people don't care too much about themselves. she just didn't like giyuu enough to be as warm or affectionate as she is to some others.

MURDER ISLAND SUCKED. FOUR PEOPLE DYING THE FIRST WEEK WAS TERRIBLE. 3/4 of them were his fault, and she didn't even know! wow. but as upset and angry as she was, she did want to do something nice for him because she didn't know. shinobu can only be as smart as i am while writing her, and i am not smart when it comes to murder mysteries (pensive). that was why she got salmon from him. SHE FISHED SALMON OUT OF BLOODIED WATERS AND CLEANED IT WITH CLEAN WATER SHE COLLECTED BEFORE IT GOT BLOODIED. i think about this a lot. it's so funny and so terrible at the same time. shinobu unknowingly rewarded him for being a (cursed, compelled) filthy murderer. his apparent character growth made her like him more. a mistake.

for all that shinobu didn't choose to distrust him that the island was cursed (which all their explorations pretty much supported), she still didn't know how much she should be believe about what the island told them. or more like, she was so angry and spiteful that she didn't want to acquiesce to what the island wanted. shinobu only kills who she thinks deserve it, those who are proven guilty, so to kill to save people is very contradictory and goes against her moral values and her principles. murder island sucks!

anyway, she began to care more about him? she started to like him more? she was working with him more and wasn't bullying him or getting as annoyed by him quite as much. although as noted in that first week thread, that she could slip back into bullying him easily was nice with the backdrop of everything going on. some kind of usual banter was nice, almost grounding. it was some kind of normalcy even if nothing about their lives is normal anymore (or at least their normal is nothing easy).

fast forward to that thread where i should've gone to bed. and the sudden realization that it could be giyuu. somehow, it could be him. the only evidence that pointed to him that she knew for sure was their first conversation. logically, it had to be more than just a hunch, but also, is one conversation enough to point all the blame on someone, someone she thought she could trust? someone she thought was being a better person? only it turns out he wasn't, not really? he could be behind a murder or many murders? it's a lot to think about once, and she has the processing power for that but she's still an 18yo girl and as mature as she can be, she's so angry all the time. also, you need to know that i went into the post-trial thread wanting shinobu to get a pinky promise out of giyuu before that late night thread went down. it was my goal for our last pc, no matter what end we got for the game, so it just. made it worse when all the realizations came later. i was like, wow, time to suffer!!!

haha, but it is because of the pinky promise that it honestly broke her heart a little, and while she wasn't completely blinding herself to the truth, as much as kasaneena seemed to question her, she did want more time to process it. she knew she didn't have that time, though. but she still wasn't 100 percent convinced he was the mastermind, which is why she didn't immediately go to confront him (but also because i was sincerely considering going to bed and was like we can badend or kyuu&co can do something about it and then got the group execution dm VERY FUNNY).

so when everyone got brought back to life after his death, that was the undeniable proof that he was guilty. even if it wasn't by his full choice, even though he was controlled, he was still behind it, and her anger boiled over. betrayed but not by choice but still betrayed. she did sincerely believe that the island made him a little smarter somehow, but that's part because she can't believe she let herself be so fooled. it makes a small part of her wonder how much of his change was island influenced because it's a fact that the island influenced him.

it makes her opinion and thoughts and feelings on him much more complicated now. he's free of the island's control, but how much of what she saw of him on the island was him and how much of his change was brought about because of the island? she doesn't know. it's a little painful to wonder. she's relieved that he's free, but things are complicated!

being the mastermind, compelled or not, reset him back to where he was at the start of island in terms of how much she likes him. he took a few steps forward and now he's all the way back. she can come to forgive him (she more or less has to some point), but it doesn't change how upset she was. it's going to be bullying giyuu hours again.

i probably forgot a lot but i'm sliding this in before game start please love me
