it's very loaded!! i think dimitri was extra quick to trust giyuu because he seemed to know so much, which should've been something to be suspicious of, but no, brain empty. he really respected him, and the 'honest' parts of giyuu would still really appeal to him as a person. someone who takes responsibility and duty that seriously, someone who supports the people around him, without acting like a stuffy knight... he just seems very unpretentious and hardworking! and he clearly is ready to sacrifice a lot.
of course dima really put a lot of burdens on him, which he felt bad about but he likes that he doesn't sense cruelty in giyuu... thanks to byleth sensei he doesn't view being taciturn as cold anymore, so he never really suspected giyuu to be unfeeling, esp with how much he seemed to care for their camp and dimitri's wellbeing, or he wouldn't have trusted him as executioner.
that said dimitri had kinda fixated on marie's killer early-on and figured it was someone who'd been friendly with her... and then there were the footprints, which obviously i only started suspecting this week bc i'm a dummey, but with that and the 'curse' stuff, there were things he noticed and found strange, but... he didn't really put anything together because he trusted giyuu and didn't suspect him until it was literally impossible not to. he viewed everything in a lens assuming he was innocent. so now he feels pretty Bad about it, since that trust blinded him so hard. at the execution he obviously had to get Vegeance, but also he was really genuinely upset and wanted to know if giyuu was just fucking with him the whole time, or if he had wanted to fight the island's influence somehow.
either way he's not like, off to kill giyuu again on the last log!! knowing that the island forced him to do it, it's obviously not his fault or maliciousness.. but dimitri still has some personal resentment to burn through because he feels betrayed. he also saw that the pain/murderous intent at the execution after he killed shinobu was Very Real, so obviously he knows he did him wrong, too, and also knows he was pretty awful about it.
overall, he's just being an annoying baby and has a lot of Emotions because he's 17. deep down he knows they're all victims here, it's just hard not to feel a little hurt because they're.. wait for it..... friends!
